How many times a day should a dog eat?

Most adult dogs do well on two meals a day, morning and evening. Some dogs do better with more. Pick your dog for a quick answer.

Which is your dog?

The short answer

For most adult dogs, two meals a day is the simple, safe choice. It fits most homes. It keeps the stomach from being empty all day. And it is easy to split the daily amount in half.

The number of meals does not change how much your dog should eat in a day. Work out the daily amount first. Then divide it.

Is once a day okay?

Many healthy dogs eat once a day. In 2022, the Dog Aging Project looked at owner surveys for more than 24,000 dogs. Dogs fed once a day had fewer reported health problems, such as stomach, teeth and joint problems.

But this study shows a link, not a cause. It did not record exactly what or how much the dogs ate. The researchers say it is a first step, not advice to change how you feed. So do not switch to one meal because of it.

One meal a day is not a good idea for big, deep-chested dogs, for diabetic dogs, or for dogs that get very hungry.

Big dogs and bloat

Bloat is when the stomach fills with gas and can twist. It is an emergency. Big, deep-chested breeds have the highest risk. Examples are Great Danes, Weimaraners, Standard Poodles and Irish Setters.

In a 2004 study of these breeds, dogs fed a larger amount per meal had a higher risk of bloat. The risk was highest for big amounts fed once a day. So split the day's food into two or more meals. Many vets also suggest no hard play right after a big meal.

Signs of bloat include a hard, swollen belly, trying to vomit with nothing coming up, and restlessness. Go to a vet right away.

Dogs that need to lose weight

For weight loss, the daily amount is what counts. Feed for the weight your dog should be, not the weight they are now. Then split it into two or three meals. More meals mean shorter gaps, which can help a dog on a diet wait for the next one.

Our 7-step plan to help your dog lose weight explains the rest. The calculator shows an example for a round 60 lb dog.

Dogs that are always hungry

A dog that begs all day may do better with three or four small meals. Divide the same daily amount. Do not add food. A puzzle feeder or slow bowl makes each meal last longer. Read more about why your dog is always hungry.

Diabetic dogs

Diabetic dogs on insulin need meals at set times, matched to their shots. Your vet will set the routine. Keep it the same every day, and do not change it on your own.

Older dogs

Most older dogs do fine on two meals. Some eat better with smaller, more frequent meals. A sudden change in appetite in an older dog is worth a vet visit.

Should I leave food out all day?

Leaving the bowl full all day is called free feeding. It makes it hard to know how much your dog eats. Many dogs eat too much this way and gain weight. Set meals are easier to control.

A simple daily routine

  1. Find the daily amount for your dog's healthy weight with the dog food calculator.
  2. Split it into two meals, for example at 7 am and 6 pm.
  3. Weigh the food, or weigh one scoop once so you know what it holds.
  4. Count treats as part of the day. The treat calculator helps.
  5. Feed at about the same times each day.

Questions

Is it cruel to feed my dog once a day?

No. Many healthy adult dogs eat once a day and do well. Two meals is often easier for hungry dogs and safer for big, deep-chested breeds.

What are the best times to feed a dog?

Times that fit your day and stay the same. Morning and early evening work for most homes. Leave some hours between the last meal and bedtime.

How do I switch from one meal to two?

Split the same daily amount into two halves. You can start the next day. There is no need to add food.

Should I feed before or after a walk?

Many vets suggest waiting about an hour after a meal before hard exercise. This matters most for big, deep-chested dogs.

How many times a day should a puppy eat?

A common guide: 4 meals a day up to 3 months, 3 meals at 4 to 5 months, and 2 meals from 6 to 12 months. Tiny breeds such as Chihuahuas and Yorkies can get low blood sugar if they miss meals, so they may need meals more often. Ask your vet if your puppy is very small or not growing well.
